Resident Spotlight

This Was The Year....1956

Letter from the Administrator

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to our March edition of the ViewPoint.

I'm not sure about all of you winter lovers but I'm looking forward to March 20th and the beginning of Spring.

March is a great month as we transition not only with the weather but with our activities  and increasing outdoor activities.  As you will note from our Calendar we are beginning the Garden Club and garden planning.  We have purchased 4 raised gardens for our residents to get their hands dirty in the flowers and vegetables.  We have St. Patrick's and St. Josephs Day activities to celebrate our Irish and Italian Heritage.

We are continuing our planning and design work for our Facility renovations later this year.  I am hoping to have story boards outlining the designs, color schemes and scope of the work to be done available in our lobby soon.

We will also host meetings with all our residents, families and staff as we get closer to explain the renovations and the process put in place to be least disruptive as we spruce up.

For your information our Quality Indicators (those items that are publicly reported) are doing very well, much better than the state and national numbers.  This is again a tribute to the staff and their daily efforts and I thank them for these excellent outcomes.

I would like to recognize and congratulate our 2009 Annual "Whatever It Takes" Award winner Amy Lamantia.  Amy is a nurse on our first floor with primary assignment of the Pines neighborhood.

We also must congratulate Kim Coutu our February 2010 "Whatever It Takes" winner.  Kim is a CNA also in the Pines neighborhood.  We are very proud of these people and their special gifts.

Please remember to stay in touch with us through our website www.westviewnursing.com.

I wish you all a happy and healthy March and look forward to our paths crossing in our home.

Best wishes,

Hugh J. Hall

ASK....BELLA

Dear Bella,

Could you please tell me why Black Labs make such great pets?                                  West View Staff

Dear West View Staff,

There are several breeds within the Labrador Retriever breed including the Black Lab.

We are very well natured, intelligent, and energetic and absolutely love praise and attention.  We are very fond of the water, which is why we have slightly webbed feet.

We make very good pets because of our adaptability and our great temperament.  We aren't ususally territorial, aggresive, hpersensitive, or destructive, although most of us do enjoy chewing, and will eat almost anything ( I myself enjoy a good paper clip now and then).

We  interact very well with children, and love to play for hours on end.  Many people consider us to be hyperactive, because we have so much energy as puppies, but this energy usually works its way out by the time we're three years old.

Being such an intelligent breed, we are really easy to train.

We have tremendous appetities, and will do anything for a treat.  We originally were found in Newfoundland, and were a cross between the St. John's Water dog and the Newfoundland dog.  We are fairly large, weighing from 40-80 pounds and have very smooth coats, short hair, and extemely powerful tails.  Our coat is also mostly waterproof, which combined with our strong tail and webbed feet make us excellent swimmers.

Thank you for the interest in my breed.

I look forward to answering your future questions.

Bella

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

On November 7, 1915 in South Philly, PA., Michael and Rose Defeo proudly became the parents of Elizabeth Catherine.  Elizabeth joined her 6 siblings in this very loving family.

As a teenager Betty attended and graduated from the Philadelphia High School for girls.  Betty always loved math and had always wanted to be a school teacher but following graduation she went to work for The Imperial Knife Co. (store).  There her duties were to send out all the catalogs to the salesmen.  Betty was employed there for 28 years.

One evening Betty's friend from work took her to Palumbo's Nightclub for her birthday...and then it happened Betty saw the man of her dreams, William Rose.  Betty and William dated a short time and then married on September 6, 1947 at St. Thomas' Church in Philadelphia.  This was followed by a wonderful honeymoon to Niagara Falls.

Betty and Bill had no children but enjoyed spending time with their many nieces and nephews.

As a couple they enjoyed traveling all of the United States and the world.  Betty says that the only places they missed were Egypt and Alaska.

Bill and Betty came to live at West View and a short time later she loss her beloved Bill.

Today Betty can be found playing bingo or enjoying a social gathering.
